I met a new friend at the same time I met this pudgy cardinal. A woman who lives nearby called to say she'd spotted cardinals in her yard and thought I might like to photograph and paint them — so she invited me for tea and birdwatching.

The first visit was a no-show from the birds, but the tea was delicious and the company was great. A few days later she called again — the birds were there and the kettle was on. This time I got my photos, my painting, and a new friend. Thank you, cardinal. You truly deserve that crown.
