Pelican on Spring Lake - Museum Quality Canvas Print

Did you know? During breeding season, American White Pelicans grow a distinctive horn-like bump on their bill — one of nature’s more eccentric accessories. It falls off after mating season, as if they’ve decided the look was a bit much.

Up to 24 pelicans call Spring Lake home, and it’s a common sight to watch them gather and synchronize their dives — working together to scoop up small fish and insects in one coordinated sweep. I photographed this one from a pelican paddle boat while my son furiously paddled us backwards to get close enough. You can’t make this stuff up.
